House of Sassan –the nomad horse archers.

One of nice changes to the DBA Sassanid list is the addition of more LH. Pictured here are new nomad horse archers supported by newly purchased and painted cataphract.

I chose lighter shades of yellow, lavender, green and linen for the tunics and darker colours of blue, madder red and red brown for the trousers. The figures are a mix of Parthian and Sarmatian horse archers. The Old Glory Sassanid horse archers were not used as they sports a globe hat which is not quite right.

The cataphract, also from Old Glory, are escorting a Royal commander and standard bearers supplied by the Italian manufacture of Strategia Nova (Miniature Wars).

These elements bring the Sassanid collection to 61 elements which should cover the three sub lists.

House of Sassan –the Asavaran cavalry

I have reached the half way mark with refurbishing the Sassanid and 27 elements of cavalry are all that remain.

When I purchased these 10 years ago, I had only Late Romans as opponents, then OG offered two types of heavy cavalry to cover an early and later period. I bought both types, but kept those half-armoured at a ratio of 1:3.

If the colours look bleached, then you are correct. This was my preferred style back then and all models were undercoated white and painted with very thin coat of paint or ink.

You will also note that many elements have flags. During the DBM period, this was my way of recognizing units, but now still have their use for DBA 3.0.

The a) list, all nobles are 3Kn and not yet 4Kn, so are now recognizable from the Asavaran cavalry by their flags. Keeping things tidy.

House of Sassan –the levy

The a) list has as an option 2 horde (7Hd) but these can be swapped for LH which for my style of game much preferred. These were painted in pastel colour and inks and ten years ago were rather nice.

After their improved treatment (belts, shields, cloaks), the Sassanids are looking very nice.
